Tribute

I’d like to pay homage to the musicians who passed away in the last month.

I honor them for their creativity, courage, and skill. Of the 25 musicians who passed since December 31, 2015 I have written about the three that I knew best, Natalie Cole, David Bowie and Glen Frye. I have included youtube videos of live performances. For a list of musician who have died during the first part of this month go here.

Natalie Cole

Although Natalie Cole was a successful R&B and pop artist her life work culminated in jazz.  She was extraordinary in all genres; my favorite was her work in jazz. In fact she is one of my favorite jazz singers. I find that her tonal quality, phrasing and artistry is a perfect combo for my senses. I was shocked and saddened by her passing. She was an incredible artist and a fine singer. Here are some of my favorites from her repertoire.

It’s Sand Man, Swingin’ Shepard Blues, Straighten Up And Fly Right, Orange Colored Sky

David Bowie

For some strange reason I didn’t know too much about David Bowie.  I mean, I thought I did, but after he died I realized I really didn’t know too much about him. I began to read and found this biobit.ly/1ZQtqwv  As I read about Bowie my respect morphed into gratitude. Gratitude for his unrelenting quest to create fresh ideas and push the limitation of societies and the music industries ideals.  Tough to do and have such a lengthy tenure in the music biz!

Starman, Sorrow, Heroes, China Girl, Charlie Rose interview with David Bowie

Glen Frey

Primarily known as one of the founding members of the Eagles.  He also had a solo career and many acting gigs. Being a country folkie singer during my teens and early 20’s myself,  I sang many an Eagle’s song, Peaceful Easy Feeling, Desperado, Take It Easy,  Lyin’ Eyes, Hotel California, Take It To The Limit. All great songs! Great musician! Here is a biography of Glen Frey.
